In the past two articles we discussed how we found ourselves concerned about dental materials and how we safely remove one of the worst toxins on the planet from our patients’ mouths: mercury. But once mercury amalgam fillings are removed, one might ask “What should we use to replace them?” Although no manmade product is as good as what you were born with, the great news is that there are many biocompatible materials that can be chosen to restore teeth. For smaller restorations, composite (a mixture of quartz and plastic) can be used. Most people will recognize these as tooth-colored fillings. For crowns and bridges, zirconia (a newer ceramic material) can be used.
Both composite and zirconia are metal-free materials, which is an important goal. We now understand that metals placed in the body (piercings, prosthetics, dental fillings) can disrupt energy meridians and also cause a galvanic reaction (when electrons move from one metal to another through saliva or other body fluid). When this happens, some people will report a feeling like biting on tin foil or a metallic taste. These sensations are caused by a current (many times that of what our nervous system runs on), traveling through the various fluids within our body. Being so close to the central nervous system, these currents can cause ringing in the ears, tingling in extremities, headaches, and other unpleasant symptoms. But luckily, biocompatible metal-free materials can be chosen for dental restorations when one is aware of these issues. Even removable dentures and implants have metal-free options. Depending upon the individual and their sensitivity to chemicals, one replacement dental material may be better than another. The composites that we use are free of harmful fluoride and BPA (a chemical that can disrupt the body’s hormones and cause cancer and other serious illnesses). With Clifford Consulting and Clinical Research’s Materials Reactivity Test, it’s possible to find out which dental materials are the least likely to elicit an allergic reaction. This test can check the suitability of nearly 20,000 dental materials for the individual patient (a blood serum sample obtained by a local licensed health care professional is sent to their lab in Colorado). Our patients also have the option to utilize applied kinesiology (muscle testing) in our office with Dr. Maureen to check for sensitivities. Watch for our next article in Our BerkshireTimes magazine for more about Dr. Maureen’s special interest in nutrition and detoxification. We encourage our patients to do their own research if they are concerned about the techniques and materials we use so that they feel confident in their amalgam replacement. ~ Drs.
